Since the early 1970's the Lornex Open Pit Copper Mine has been operating successfully in spite of varying degrees of slope instability. This paper describes the nature of some of the instability, the investigation methods used to establish slope failure modes and to monitor slope movement, and the operating practices applied to ensure safety of the mine personnel and equipment, while maintaining the required production levels. The slope stability program for the pit has involved a variety of theoretical and practical investigations which have been performed jointly by the mining company and consulting personnel.
