The Demise of the Federation

During 1958, the price of copper levelled out at £160 per ton, less than half the recent record figures.1 While the Northern Rhodesian government was preoccupied with the impact of falling copper prices on future African incomes,2 two responses by the mining companies were possible: cuts in production, and cuts in sales. This, together with industrial unrest in some other major world producers, helped push prices up from late 1958, and new record production on the Copperbelt was recorded in 1960, when output restrictions were lifted, by which time Northern Rhodesia had overtaken Chile in terms of production, becoming the world’s largest exporter of copper.4 However, the air of uncertainty overhanging the copper industry was easily exacerbated.
