One common feature of British business activity during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries was the existence of associations between firms to fix prices and, in some cases, to restrict output within industries. In TheFirstIndustrialNation, Peter Mathias argued that, despite their ubiquity, these associations probably had little impact on the national economy, on the grounds that they were mainly expedient, entered into by firms to cope with adverse market conditions during periods of economic depression, and were regional and relatively short-lived.
