The history of the combination among the producers of copper between the years 1785 and 1792 offers an early example of a modern type of combination, and the course of its development during the seven years of its existence presents a parallel to that of many recent combinations. A short description of the state of affairs in the copper-mining industry during the years which immediately preceded the formation of the combine will be sufficient to indicate the causes which brought it about, and will in addition show the way in which Boulton and Watt became so intimately connected with the industry.
